Almond Tart

1 package (10 oz.) frozen puff patty shells, thawed
1 cup blanched whole almonds
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
3 tblsp soft butter or margarine
1/4 tsp almond extract
1 tsp grated lemon peel
3 tblsp powered sugar


How to make almond tart:
  • Allow frozen patty shells to warm almost to room temperature.
  • For filling, whirl almonds in a blender until you have the consistency of cracked wheat.
  • Turn into a bowl; add sugar, 1 egg, the yolk only of second egg, butter, almond extract, and lemon peel.
  • Beat until blended and creamy.
  • On a lightly floured board, arrange 2 patty shells, with edges touching.
  • Cut a third shell in half and place outside edges next to the 2 whole shells to form a rough circle; pinch edges together.
  • Roll out into a 10 inch circle.
  • Repeat with remaining 3 a shells, making a second circle.
  • Place 1 circle of puff paste on an ungreased baking sheet.
  • Spread with filling to within 1 inch of the edge.
  • Top with remaining pastry.
  • With fork, seal the outer edge; then cut decorative slashes across top layer of pastry.
  • Brush top with remaining egg white, lightly beaten.
  • Sift powdered sugar evenly over top.
  • Bake in a 450( oven for 20 minutes; reduce temperature to 400( and bake 10 minutes longer or until well brown.
